The Research in New Zealand Mobility Portal
The Research in New Zealand Mobility Portal is operated by FRENZ (Facilitating Research cooperation between Europe and New Zealand).
The Mobility Portal aims to:
- Facilitate the movement of European researchers to New Zealand
- Help stimulate RS&T cooperation between New Zealand and Europe
- Build upon the history of New Zealand-Europe bilateral research cooperation and increase the engagement of New Zealand and European researchers in EU Framework Programme projects.

Overview of New Zealand-EU research cooperation:
The EU classifies New Zealand as an industrialised third country, grouped with the likes of the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea and Australia.
New Zealand-EU STC Arrangement
The European Commission and New Zealand signed an informal STC (Science and Technology Cooperation) Agreement in 1991, identifying;
- Agriculture
- Biomass
- Biotechnology
- Environment
- Forestry
- Renewable energies
- Telecommunications and ICT as research fields of mutual interest concerning potential collaboration
New Zealand Science Counsellor to the EU
In 2004, MoRST (the New Zealand Ministry of Research, Science and Technology) installed a Science Counsellor within the Brussels-based New Zealand Mission to the EU.
- In this same year, the Delegation of the European Commission to New Zealand was established in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.
New-Zealand-EU Joint Declaration
In September 2007 New Zealand and the EU updated the 1999 Joint Declaration on Relations and Cooperation Between the European Union and New Zealand.
- The Joint Declaration set out a detailed action programme for the EU and New Zealand to 2012.
New Zealand-EU STC Agreement
On the 16th of July 2008, New Zealand and the EU signed an STC Agreement, which entered into force on the 30th of January 2009.
- This Agreement effectively replaces the former STC Arrangement and allows for improved cooperation between New Zealand and European researchers.
The FRENZ project has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013] under grant agreement n° 222665; and from the New Zealand Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
