Government Research
The New Zealand Government is the country’s largest investor in RS&T and has a significant influence upon the direction of research initiatives.
Government Ministries are funded through a series of packages termed “Votes”:
- Vote RS&T refers to the amount of governmental funding available within the New Zealand research system.
The New Zealand Government currently contributes a total of NZ$725.7 million to Vote RS&T:
- The 2008/2009 Budget provided NZ$205.4 million for new research funding for the next four years, alongside NZ$16.6 million of reallocated funds for the same period.
- The Government’s designated Funding Investment Agencies (FIAs) bear all responsibility for the subsequent funding processes, from selection to administration.
The most recent major investment objectives, as specified in the 2008/2009 Budget, focus upon:
- Creating new commercial opportunities and improving business performance;
- Providing integrated solutions for a sustainable environment and primary industries;
- Supporting New Zealand’s infrastructure and energy needs;
- Supporting health and well-being;
- Promoting the advancement of knowledge;
- Developing skilled people and maintaining organisational capabilities
