The New Zealand RS&T sector is made up of a variety of both public and private actors.
In addition to national contributions that aim to support New Zealand’s links to the international science community, the provisions of the EU Framework Programmes also assist New Zealand-EU interaction in the field of RS&T.
Government Research
The New Zealand Government is the country’s largest investor in RS&T and has a significant influence upon the direction of research initiatives.
NZ Research
New Zealand has world-class scientific capability across a wide range of research disciplines.
Funding
The Ministry of Research, Science and Technology (MoRST), the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST), the Health Research Council (HRC), the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ) and the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZVIF) constitute the public policy/funding agencies present within the national RS&T system.
Research Organisations
Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), Universities, Centres of Research Excellence (CoREs), Research Associations, Non-Government Research Organisations and the private sector carry out research and development activities within New Zealand.

The FP7 Marie Curie Actions programme presents many opportunities for EU-New Zealand research collaboration.
Collaboration in the EU Framework Programmes
New Zealand-EU Framework Programme collaboration is governed by the 2008 New Zealand-EU Science and Technology Cooperation (STC) Agreement. New Zealand researchers may participate as full partners in Framework Programmes where they provide something of value to the project.
